Most premium-priced sunglasses are stainless steel. They look the part. They cost the part. They're not the best material on the market, and most men buying them don't know what they actually paid for.
Titanium is the better metal. Has been for decades in aerospace, in medical implants, in luxury watch cases. The reason it hasn't taken over eyewear is cost, titanium frames cost three to five times more to produce than stainless steel ones. Brands sell steel because the margin is bigger. Steel sells because the buyer doesn't know to ask.
Here's what separates the two metals on a pair of sunglasses, and why it shows up the moment you put them on.
Weight on the bridge of your nose
Pure titanium is roughly 45% lighter than stainless steel at the same frame thickness. On paper that's a number. On your face, it's the difference between feeling the frames after eight hours and not.
The reason matters: lighter frames stay where they were placed. Steel frames slip down because gravity is working harder on them. Heavy steel sliders are why people fidget with their glasses constantly, pushing them up, repositioning, leaving impressions on the bridge of the nose. Titanium doesn't do that.
The way to feel the difference without buying anything: pick up a pair of premium titanium frames in a shop, then pick up a pair of designer steel ones at the same shape. The steel feels solid, expensive, almost weighty. Titanium feels like air. Most men assume heavier means better quality. Eyewear is one of the categories where it's the opposite.
Strength-to-weight ratio
Titanium has roughly the same tensile strength as steel, but at half the weight. That's the metric that actually matters for frames. You want a metal that resists bending and twisting under the daily abuse a frame takes (in pockets, on dashboards, falling from heads), without adding weight to do it.
Stainless steel can match titanium's strength only by getting thicker. Thicker means heavier. Thicker also means visible, the frame profile gets bulkier and the glasses start to look like industrial PPE rather than considered design.
This is why every premium frame brand that prioritises durability over price ends up at titanium. Lindberg. Mykita. Maui Jim's titanium line. They could use stainless steel and pocket the cost difference. They don't, because the engineering doesn't allow it.
Corrosion resistance
Stainless steel resists corrosion. Titanium is genuinely corrosion-proof.
The difference shows up in two places. First, salt water. Stainless steel pitted at the hinges and screw seats after a season of beach use is a known failure mode. Titanium can sit in salt water for years and not corrode. If you wear sunglasses on holiday, on a boat, near coastline, on the kind of trips where they get exposed to sweat and ocean spray, titanium will outlast steel by a decade or more.
Second, sweat. Human sweat is mildly acidic and slightly chlorinated. It eats stainless steel slowly. Frames worn in the gym or in heat eventually develop dull patches and rust spots near the hinges. Titanium is inert. The same sweat does nothing to it.
The nickel problem
This is the one nobody talks about. Most stainless steel frames contain nickel. Nickel is one of the most common contact allergens, somewhere between 10% and 17% of the general population reacts to it, with women showing higher rates than men, according to several large dermatology surveys.
If you've ever worn metal-framed sunglasses for a few hours and developed a red mark, an itch, or a small rash where the temple touches your skin or the nose pads sit, you may be reacting to nickel. The fix is either to switch to acetate frames (no metal at all) or to switch to titanium.
Pure titanium and Grade 5 titanium alloys are hypoallergenic. They're the only metal frames that medical-grade implant suppliers will sell into eyewear without a contact-allergy disclaimer. Steel frames marked "nickel-free" exist, but they're a small segment of the market and the labelling isn't always strict.
What the price difference actually buys
A stainless steel frame from a designer brand might cost £150-£300. A titanium frame at the same level of design and finish costs £400-£700. The premium is real. So is what it covers:
- Material cost, titanium ingot is 5-7x the price of 316L stainless
- Machining cost, titanium is harder to cut and form, requires slower tooling and special bits
- Welding cost, titanium frames need argon-shielded TIG welding, not standard mig welding
- Plating cost, gold plating on titanium uses an ion-bonding process, not standard electroplating, because titanium doesn't accept regular plating chemistry
None of that is invisible to the wearer. It's why titanium frames feel different in the hand, sit better on the face, and hold their finish longer.
What to check before you buy
Frame manufacturers describe their materials in ways that hide the truth. Some shorthand:
- "Pure titanium" or "100% titanium", what you want. Lightest, fully corrosion-proof, hypoallergenic.
- "Titanium alloy" (Grade 5, Beta-titanium), also good. Slightly stronger than pure titanium, slightly less expensive, still hypoallergenic.
- "Titanium-coated" or "titanium finish", marketing. The frame is steel or another base metal with a thin titanium-coloured plating. None of the actual benefits.
- "Stainless steel", the default. Heavier, can corrode, may contain nickel.
- "Monel" or "nickel silver", alloy of nickel and copper. Cheaper than steel, worse on every metric, almost certain to cause allergic reactions in sensitive wearers.
If a frame doesn't tell you what metal it is, assume it's the cheapest one that looked acceptable to the brand. Nobody hides materials they're proud of.
